History and future of bingo
While early forms of bingo were played in 16th century Europe, it was an American businessman who developed the modern game.
Edwin Lowe was visiting a carnival in the 1920s when his attention was grabbed by the number of people playing a game called Beano. This involved covering numbers with dried beans when they were called out.
One player accidently shouted "Bingo!" instead of "Beano" when they had covered all their numbers, which inspired Lowe. He soon hired a maths professor to help expand the game, so the number of unique numbered cards grew from 24 to 6000.
Soon, no church fundraiser was complete without a game of bingo, and today bingo is still used to raise money for many charitable causes.
